Discover Kume Augusta

Walking into Kume Augusta feels like stepping into a neighborhood spot that knows exactly what it is and leans into it. Tucked away at 19 Stephen King Dr Suite 1, Augusta, ME 04330, United States, this diner-style restaurant has built a quiet reputation among locals who value consistency, generous portions, and food that actually tastes like someone cared while making it. I first stopped in on a cold afternoon after a long drive, and the warmth inside wasn’t just from the grill-it was the kind that comes from being greeted like a regular even when you’re not.

The menu reads like a love letter to comfort food with a practical twist. You’ll find familiar staples alongside a few Asian-inspired touches that give the kitchen room to play. On one visit, I watched a short-order cook prep multiple plates at once, timing each component so everything landed hot and fresh. That process matters. According to the National Restaurant Association, more than 70% of diners say food quality and consistency are the main reasons they return to a restaurant, and you can see that philosophy in action here. Nothing feels rushed, yet service stays efficient, even during the lunch rush.

What stands out is how the kitchen balances simplicity with care. Burgers come off the flat-top with a proper sear, breakfasts arrive with eggs cooked exactly as ordered, and sauces aren’t dumped on as an afterthought. A server once explained that they prep core ingredients daily to keep flavors steady, which lines up with what food safety research from the USDA recommends about freshness and temperature control. You taste that attention in small ways-the crispness of fries, the seasoning in the rice, the tenderness of grilled proteins.

Reviews around town often mention home-style comfort, and that phrase fits without trying too hard. Regulars talk about stopping in weekly, sometimes ordering the same dish every time because it never disappoints. One local contractor I chatted with swore by their breakfast plates, saying he plans jobs around being able to eat there before heading out. That kind of loyalty doesn’t come from trends; it comes from reliability.

The dining room itself is modest, clean, and practical. It’s not chasing a themed aesthetic, and that works in its favor. You can hear conversations without shouting, tables are turned over quickly but never feel rushed, and the staff seems genuinely attentive. During one visit, a mix-up with a side dish was corrected immediately, no questions asked, which builds trust faster than any flashy apology. Mistakes happen in any restaurant; how they’re handled is what sticks with people.

Location matters too. Being in Augusta makes it an easy stop for office workers, families, and travelers passing through. The parking is straightforward, and the hours cater to both early risers and midday crowds. Many diners describe it as worth the drive, especially if you’re looking for something filling without the guesswork of a long wait or unpredictable flavors.

There are limits, and it’s fair to mention them. If you’re searching for fine dining plating or experimental cuisine, this probably isn’t your spot. The focus is squarely on hearty meals and straightforward service. But that clarity is also its strength. In a food landscape where menus change constantly, there’s something reassuring about a place that knows its audience and serves them well.

Over time, Kume Augusta has earned a reputation built on repetition done right. The food tastes familiar in the best way, the service feels human, and the experience leaves you satisfied rather than impressed for the wrong reasons. That balance is harder to achieve than it looks, and it’s why so many reviews read less like critiques and more like recommendations passed quietly between friends.

  • I stopped by for lunch after shopping in the area . I ordered the sushi and sashimi lunch special and a beer. It can with a small salad and a miso soup. The sashimi was nicely sliced and It came with a California roll . The service couldn't be better they were very attentive. The fish tasted great it was fresh and very flavorful. I would recommend Kume and I will be back when ever in the area. Also that lunch was under $30 I felt money well spent.

  • Always a great experience. Hibachi chefs are kid-friendly and interact with everyone. The deep fried sushi rolls are soooo gooood! Place is clean and they even have a large aquarium and giant statue. Cool for pics!

  • I didn't realize that we have good Japanese food in Augusta! We DO! I had the salmon sushi lunch and it was excellent. My friend and I shared the Age Tofu appetizer and she had the sushi lunch. Both lunches came with soup and salad. Super!

  • Amazing food with wonderful servers. They were very quick to seat us and bring our meals. There seems to be a bit of a language barrier. However, if you ask a question about the menu, it will be worked out. Very friendly associates. The restaurant has a bar with TVs, if you want to watch a game. Lots of tables are available, and the hibachi area has many as well. Bring your family and friends to enjoy a delightful meal. There is a kids menu as well.

  • Our chef was in a good mood and very entertaining. The food was also good. I like the rice they use. Price was also good. It left me room to tip. We left our chef a tip at the table but I doubt the chef got it. We had also left a tip for our server. But the servers scooped up the chefs tip so I doubt he got it. Anyway it was a good experience and my first time going.

  • Love Kume in Augusta! We routinely go to Kume for sushi, but we recently took our children (under 10) to try hibachi for the first time. Oh my goodness, did they love every second! We had an absolutely fabulous experience! We had a mix of sushi, hibachi, green tea desserts, and fancy drinks, and all were incredibly delicious. The hibachi performance was spectacular and super kid friendly. We loved how engaged our chef was with our small children. Our kids were totally wowed and laughing the whole time :) All of the staff that assisted us throughout our visit were fantastic, but I need to really highlight a woman named Summer. My little girl is still talking about how wonderful and friendly she was. She engaged with the kids, listening to them and asking follow-up questions to show interest. My daughter keeps mentioning her new friend Summer and has been begging to go back for hibachi so she can see her new friend again. Needless to say, we will be back again soon, but given the level of service and food quality we have experienced, both during this most recent visit but also every time we choose Kume for dinner, I needed to leave a Google review. We always have a wonderful experience.
